Conclusion: FileMaker Go and iOS 9 Multitasking

1

Update: FileMaker Go now supports iOS 9 Multitasking. Click to read more: FileMaker Go iOS 9 Multitasking Support

FileMaker Go 14 is not yet compatible with the new multitasking feature in iOS 9. I say ‘yet’ because FileMaker may add compatibility in the future. I have now used the new multitasking feature on a colleges iPad and I can confirm that FileMaker Go will not work with the split view multitasking, or any of the multitasking options. In fact there aren’t many apps that you can use with multitasking altogether.

When trying to use the slide over mode with FileMaker Go; the app resigns into an ‘idle’ mode. You can see this in the gallery at the bottom of the post.

What are the Multitasking Modes?

There are in fact three modes to the new multitasking feature on iPad. Slide Over, Picture in Picture and Split View. Most of these can be describes just from their mode names.

Slide Over is a smaller version of the app that slides over the main app from the right hand side of the device.

Picture in Picture is where a video plays in a smaller screen whilst you continue using the main app.

Split View is where two apps are on screen, and usable, at once. The screen is divided 50/50.

Here are the supported iPads for each multitasking mode:

It might be that FileMaker will release an update for FileMaker Go and iOS 9 multitasking, or maybe we will never be able to multitask with FileMaker Go? Your guess is as good as mine! But I certainly hope that it becomes a possibility in the near future!

FileMaker Go and iOS 9 multitasking is one for the future perhaps?
